Introduction to The Nomad Historian
North American history and politics from a French Canadian lens
Welcome to The Nomad Historian, created by independent writer and amateur historian Patrick Primeau.
Arts graduate from McGill University in History and Political Science back in ‘99, I now consider myself a self-taught historian generalist predominantly of North America; from New France and American colonies to the present Canada and USA.
My intention with this newsletter is to periodically post short essays that will try to offer wider perspectives on specific events or contemporary trends, as well as historical depth and forecast on current political and sociological trends.
By extracting the wisdom of history’s outcomes and of various academics / writers / thinkers from the past and present, I will try to make sense of the current moods our culture faces.
By posting articles both in French and English, my goal is also to offer the English speaking world a direct access to a French Canadian point of view.
To break the two solitudes as we often say in Canada.
I always thought my linguistically isolated nation should engage more with our immediate neighbours in their own langage.
Lastly, this newsletter will serve as a tool for me to progressively structure my thinking on various subjects. There is nothing like writing to accomplish such a task.
Most essays will also offer insights and or quotes from books I’ve read over the years.
For those wondering why I titled my newsletter “The Nomad Historian”, nomad simply refers to the GenX generational archetype as described by academics like William Strauss and Neil Howe to which I identify to.
