What is this publication about ?
This bilingual Substack, available in both English & French, offers essays, written conversations, and podcasts mainly focused on North American history, politics, and generational trends.
This publication aims to bridge the cultural gap between French Canada and the rest of North America by, for example, shedding light on the history of Québec through essays written in English. Conversely, in articles written in my native language, I also plan to share my research and perspectives with French readers who are interested in exploring broader topics, including the history of the United States and its centuries-long relationship with French Canada.
By default, this newsletter aims to add historical depth and perspective to contemporary narratives, extending beyond the rushed daily analysis of traditional news outlets, which are too often driven by deadlines, revenues, and the pursuit of easy clicks on social media platforms.
Most essays will:
contextualize current public discourse and events within an historical framework;
offer thought-provoking quotes and suggested readings from interesting sources;
explore wisdom from various fields in the humanities such as history, philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology, demography, etc;
attempt to open unexplored territory that can help stimulate our sense-making abilities.

Who is the writer behind The Nomad Historian ?
My name is Patrick Primeau. A graduate from McGill University with a degree in History and Political Science, I have primarily focused my attention over the years on North America, with a particular interest in the French Canadian influences on the population of today’s Canada and the United States.
After decades of extensive reading, travel, living abroad, raising a family of three kids with my lifelong partner, and occupying various management roles in the private sector, I have decided to consolidate my research and writing on this platform, nurture my passion for history and engage with a community of avid non-fiction readers, just like me.
On this note, the year 2024 has marked a return to a partial academic life for me as I embark on a Master’s degree program in American History. Never too late to pursue one’s personal goals !

Cette publication mensuelle offrira une perspective et profondeur historique qui ira au-delà des analyses courantes que l’on retrouve dans les médias traditionnels, trop souvent préoccupés par les heures de tombées, la pression financière et les clics faciles.
Selon le sujet, des textes seront offerts en français ou en anglais, permettant ainsi une opportunité d’accès à un lectorat plus vaste.

Mon but est d’offrir à mes lecteurs de courts essais sur une base régulière avec l’intention de :
contextualiser l’actualité et les récits contemporains dans une perspective historique plus large;
offrir des suggestions de lecture permettant d’approfondir davantage certains sujets;
explorer et puiser la sagesse issue de disciplines variées comme l’histoire, la science politique, la psychologie, la sociologie, la démographie, etc;
ouvrir des terrains de réflexions inexplorés.
Qui est derrière cette publication ?
Diplômé en Arts de l'Université McGill en histoire américaine et sciences politiques, je me considère maintenant comme un historien amateur autodidacte, principalement de l'Amérique du Nord, mais avec un intérêt particulier pour les influences canadiennes-françaises dans le peuplement du Canada et des États-Unis.
Après des décennies de lecture, de voyages, d’expatriation temporaire, de vie de famille (3 enfants) avec ma partenaire de toujours, d'occupation de divers postes de gestion dans le secteur privé, j'ai décidé de lancer ce projet et de revenir à ma passion initiale, de partager mes réflexions par écrit et d’engager une communauté de lecteurs partageant les mêmes intérêts.
2024 marquera un retour pour moi à la vie académique, du moins à temps partiel, alors que je débuterai un parcours de maîtrise en histoire des États-Unis.
Les suggestions, collaborations, commentaires et propositions d'entrevues sont les bienvenues.
